Tanya Tucker had her first hit with “Delta Dawn” in 1972 at the age of thirteen and never looked back. She subsequently had a string of hits that kept her in the public eye. The hits do not come as fast as they used to but she continues to have a strong following as evidenced by the folks who came out to see her show at the California Theater of the Performing Arts on November 6th.

Her band started the show without her and then Tanya took the stage performing “Some Kind Of Trouble.” Other tunes she performed included “Love Me Like You Used To,” “Two Sparrows In A Hurricane,” “Last Teardrop” and “San Antonio Stroll” just to name a few. She started into “Delta Dawn” with a verse of “Amazing Grace.”

She also performed “In The Ghetto” and “Something” as tribute to Elvis and The Beatles respectively.

Tucker was in good voice and did a lot of posing. She would often end a song with her head turned sideways to the audience and her chin pointed up in the air. She talked a lot about her history in the business and being managed by her father. She told the audience that one day when she was about seven she told her father she wanted to sing him a song and when her father was a little doubtful she sang “Your Cheating Heart.” Her father then said “I think I see a way out of poverty.”

Her daughter and niece were in the audience. She brought them on stage and had them each sing a song acapella. They were both pretty good too.

She was backed by a seven piece band. The keyboardist was so new she actually met him on stage. A couple members of her entourage usually work for Dolly Parton and she can only have them if Dolly is not on tour which caused her to jokingly remark “What am I, cottage cheese?”

Opening the show were the Doo Wah Riders. This five piece outfit put on a fun show that warmed up the audience nicely.

Songs they performed included “Five Pound Bass,” “Dear Beer,” and Eddie Rabbits “Drivin’ My Life Away.”

They also performed a new song “We Need To Have A Little Talk,” which is a ballad that is basically about when bad things happen to good people.

Fiddler Keith Niehenke was featured on the “Orange Blossom Special.” He began the song by calling out with Ozzy Osbourne’s “All aboard” and maniacal laugh. He performed the song walking through the audience and sometimes played behind his back. The band also worked in other tunes during the song including the Andy Griffith Show theme and “Smoke On The Water.” During “Smoke On The Water” Niehenke took off his Cowboy Hat and started shaking his head as if he were at a Heavy Metal concert, much to the delight of the audience.

Their last song was “Doo Wah Riders Ride Again,” which was another song made up of other songs. For example, “The William Tell Overture,” “Ghost Riders In The Sky,” “Rawhide” and the theme to Bonanza were all included.

Both acts put on entertaining shows that more than satisfied the audience.
