Book Review: Tanya Tucker - "100 Ways To
Beat The Blues"; March 2005

"100 Ways to Beat The Blues" showed up in my
mailbox a couple of weekends ago. I thought, wow, this could not have come
at a better time. I was in a rare, but pretty nasty funk.
Scanned through the book and read a couple of
tear jerker how-to-beat-the-blues stories and proceeded to dig myself a
deeper hole to wallow in. Damn, this book ain't working worth a lick I
thought.
The next day I picked up the book and started
reading it in earnest. More than one of the writers pointed out that we
(the writer and I) were doing nothing more than having our own little pity
party.
Some of the writers really put things in
perspective. Losing a child or serving in the armed forces in a combat
situation makes whatever you think you got the blues over seem pretty
minimal.
A couple of writers gave some real good advice
about what not to do about your blues. Roseanne's "Motorcyles Blues" got me
to laughing, because doing some serious damage to a certain persons truck
has certainly crossed my mind. Then I thought, hey this book is starting to
do the trick.
I am pretty sure I already knew this, but the
book reinforced the best way for me to kick the blues is confront whatever
it is that needs confronting and kick it square in the ass.
There are a lot of great stories in Tanya's
book. Probably one of the better ones was the one Tanya wrote herself. The
pictures on the jacket cover of Tanya with the kids and the critters was a
bonus.
